Abstract
<PICT:0696275/III/1> A process for producing carbon granules by carbonizing anthracite or like carbonaceous material comprises preheating or partly carbonizing a charge of anthracite by means of heat generated by the combustion of gases liberated from the anthracite during the preheating or subsequent complete carbonization and subsequently completing the carbonization by passing electric current through the charge. The process may be carried out in the apparatus shown in Fig. 1 in which the anthracite is fed from a hopper 5 into an inclined revolving drum 1 in which the anthracite is preheated or partly carbonized. In the latter case the temperature in the drum 1 is maintained between 800-1000 DEG C and air for combustion of the gases liberated in the drum is admitted through pipes 4 in a quantity such that no excess oxygen is present. The partly carbonized material passes via a receiver 7 and charging gate 16 to an electric shaft furnace 8 having upper and lower electrodes 9 and 10 wherein the carbonization of the anthracite is completed. Granules of carbonized anthracite are discharged by a rotating platform 13 into a cooling chamber 14 from which they are removed in skips. If the anthracite is only preheated in the drum 1 most of the volatile constituents of the anthracite are liberated in the shaft furnace 8 and a pipe 11 is provided to conduct the evolved gases to the drum 1. In a modification the revolving drum 1 is replaced by a stationary vertical chamber provided with inclined baffle plates between which a body of the anthracite is moved downwards to the electric shaft furnace. The gases liberated in the electric shaft furnace are burnt in a separate combustion chamber and the hot gases are led through the column of anthracite in the preheating chamber. A temperature of 500-600 DEG C is maintained in the preheating chamber. A furnace with an oscillating grate or one with an endless band grate may also be used for preheating the anthracite.
