Abstract
216,761. Johnson, J. Y., (Badische Anilin & Soda Fabrik). Sept. 17, 1923. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Carbon; sulphur.-Active carbon, especially suitable for purifying gases from sulphuretted hydrogen by catalytic oxidation with air, is prepared by placing a carbonaceous material, such as coal, anthracite, lignite, peat, wood or cha.rcoal, with or without previous impregnation with alkalies or salts such as potash or zinc chloride, on a permeable layer of fireproof material in a shaft furnace and blowing through the whole hot combustion gases with or without steam with sufficient pressure to agitate the carbonaceous material. In an example, grains of peat charcoal are placed on a layer of pieces of fireclay or quartz pebbles supported by a plate of fireclay in a shaft furnace B, and a blast of combustion gases, produced by blowing fuel in the chamber A with blue gas' and/or air. is passed therethrough. When the temperature has reached 800‹ C., steam is mixed with the combustion gases. The finished carbon is removed by closing the waste nipe F and opening the discharge C, when the charge is blown into the chamber D, which may be filled with an inert gas, such as nitrogen or carbon dioxide. The apparatus is again charged from the chamber E, in which a supply of peat charcoal may be stored and preliminarily dried and heated.
