Abstract

April 23, 1927, [Convention date]. .Producers.-In the gasification of coal or other fuel containing volatile constituents so as to produce hydrogen or a gas mixture suitable for use in ammonia synthesis and similar catalytic processes, a mixture of air or oxygen and water vapour is employed and the hydrocarbons in the mixture obtained are converted into carbon monoxide and hydrogen, and the carbon monoxide removed. In carrying out this process oxygen and steam are blown into a gas producer charge and the hot gases passed through the fresh coal to distil the latter. The hot gases are passed into a reaction chamber filled with refractory material and supplied with oxygen, air and water vapour, and to accelerate the catalytic reaction, the filling for the reaction chamber may be oxides of akaline earths, oxides of iron chromium or manganese, platinum or coke.
