504,529. Obtaining gases rich in hydrogen. METALLGES.AKT.-GES. July 26, 1938, No. 22260. Convention date, Sept. 27, 1937. [Classes 65 (i),and 55 (ii)] In the production of gas mixtures containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the volume ratio of about 1 to 2 for synthesis purposes by the gasefication of fuels under pressures of several atmospheres by means of oxygen-steam mixtures, the proportion of oxygen used being about 0À1 to 0À2 N.T.P. cubic metres per N.T.P. cubic metre of gas produced, carbon dioxide is added to the gasefication medium in amounts ranging from about half to three times the volume of oxygen employed. In an example, coke is gasefied under a pressure of 10 atmospheres with a gas mixture comprising about 0À13 cubic metre of O2, 0À65 kilograms of steam, and 0À2 cubic metre of CO2, to produce a gas,mixture in which the CO and H2 proportions comprise 21 and 42 per cent respectively. A pressure range of 5 to 50 atmospheres is specified and a gas mixture is produced which is practically free from methane. Carbon dioxide is washed from the gas mixture under pressure and a part is returned to the producer for adding to the gasefication medium. The CO2 may be heated to a temperature of 500‹ C. before entering the producer and it may also be saturated with steam to economise the latter in the process. Inferior tars or oils or gaseous hydrocarbons, such as methane, may be added to the gasefication medium and are cracked in the producer.
