Gas-producers are continuously operated with a bottom blast consisting of oxygen and carbon dioxide with or without the addition of steam, the proportion of carbon dioxide to oxygen being between 1 to 3.5 and 1 to 2. In an example a total volume of blast, excluding water vapour, of 1400 standard cubic metres per hour is supplied to a fuel bed of bituminous coal having about 33% of volatile constituents. The percentage composition of the blast by volume in carbon dioxide 8, oxygen 28 and nitrogen 64 with the addition of 98 kg. per hour of steam. The gas produced had the following percentage composition by volume: carbon dioxide 1.0, methane 0.3, other hydrocarbons 1.0, carbon monoxide 47, hydrogen 10.5 and nitrogen 40.2.
