Abstract
A combustible gas mixture comprises an oxygen-containing gas, e.g. oxygen, a hydrocarbon gas, e.g. ethylene, acetylene, methane, propane or butane, having a flame speed less than 10 feet per second, and a fast-burning gas containing hydrogen having a flame speed greater than 12 feet per second, the amount of hydrogen in the mixture being from 30 to 48% by volume calculated on the total volume of hydrogen and hydrocarbon. The fast-burning gas may be hydrogen, or hydrogen and nitrogen in the proportions for ammonia synthesis.
