Abstract
Combustible gas is produced by passing a mixture of hydrogen and non-cyclic, aliphatic light hydrocarbons, e.g. ethane or pentane having from 2 to 7 carbon atoms per molecule into contact with a platinum group metal catalyst at a temperature of 80 DEG to 600 DEG C., whereby hydrogenolysis of the hydrocarbons produces gases including methane. Catalyst metals specified are Rh, Ru, Pd and Pt and combinations thereof, and the metal may be on activated Al2O3 pellets. The temperature employed depends on the catalyst used. The proportion of hydrogen to hydrocarbon in the input may be varied to produce varying proportions of the methane in the output. Pressures of 0 to 1,000 p.s.i.g. are mentioned. Five specific examples are described in detail, producing gases which include methane in amounts ranging from 0-09 mol. per cent to 86 mol. per cent. Other feed hydrocarbons mentioned are: butane, 1-butene, ethylene, hexane, nhexylene, heptane, heptylene, propane, propylene, 1-pentene, and 2,2-dimethyl butane.
