Abstract

The selective hydrogenation of acetylenes in a gaseous mixture containing olefins and at least sufficient hydrogen to hydrogenate the acetylenes to olefins is effected in the presence of a catalyst comprising more than 0.1% and not more than 1% of palladium on activated alumina. The gas mixture may be of C2 and/or C3 hydrocarbons containing no more than 0.5% of C4 or higher hydrocarbons, e.g. obtained from a cracking operation. If necessary the hydrogen content is adjusted to 2-3 mols per mol of acetylenes which may be present in amounts up to 2%. The hydrogenation is effected at 15-500 p.s.i.g., 40 DEG C.-200 DEG C. and 1,000-15,000 volumes of gas (measured at 20 DEG C. and one atmosphere) per volume of catalyst per hour.
