Abstract

The selective hydrogenation of acetylenes in a gas mixture containing olefins e.g. ethylene and propylene is effected in a first stage with hydrogen in excess of that required to hydrogenate the acetylenes to olefins over a catalyst comprising palladium supported on alumina having a mean pore radius (method of determination described) not less than 100 the hydrogen content of the mixture is then adjusted to 2-3 moles per mole of acetylene and the mixture passed in a second stage over palladium supported on active alumina. The first stage catalyst preferably has a pore radius below 1400 and a surface area of 5-65 square metres per gram and is made as described in Specification 916,056 e.g. by heating active alumina at 800-1300 DEG C. for 2-6 hours. Each catalyst may contain up to 5% palladium e.g. 0.01-0.4%, the first stage catalyst preferably containing less than the second. The feed preferably contains less than 2% of acetylenes and 0.5% C4 and higher olefins and in the first stage may contain a considerable excess of hydrogen. The feed to the second stage preferably contains less than 0.1% acetylenes and the hydrogen content may be adjusted by removing the hydrogen after the first stage and adding the required amount. Suitable conditions are 15-500 p.s.i.g., 1,000-15,000 litres of gas (20 DEG C. and atmospheric pressure) per litre of catalyst filled space per hour and 40-200 DEG C., preferably lower in the second than the first stage.
