Abstract

The selective hydrogenation of acetylenes, or acetylenes and butadiene, in a C4 hydrocarbon mixture is effected by conducting the hydrocarbon, as a liquid in the trickle phase in a hydrogen atmosphere, over a hydrogenation catalyst under conditions such that only acetylenes and/or butadiene are hydrogenated without forming substantial amounts of butane. The process is useful for purifying butadiene by removing acetylenes, or for purifying butenes by removing butadiene and acetylenes. Suitable conditions are 0-50 DEG C., sufficient pressure to maintain the liquid phase, e.g. 5-20 atm., lower pressures being used when hydrogenating acetylenes alone, and space velocities of 3-40 kg. of hydrocarbon per litre of reaction space. The catalyst, which is preferably in a fixed bed, may be platinum or palladium in an amount of 0,2-5% on a support, or 2-15% nickel or cobalt on a support, suitable supports being clays, pumice, weakly sintered alumina or magnesia, alumina gel, silica gel, active carbon or natural aluminium or magnesium silicates. The support is preferably macro-porous, with a surface area of less than 50 square metres/gm. and a water absorption capacity of at least 10%.
