Abstract

Hydrocarbons containing deuterium are prepared by passing a mixture of an unsaturated hydrocarbon and deuterium oxide in the form of steam over a reducing catalyst at an elevated temperature. The preferred unsaturated hydrocarbons are acetylene and ethylene. Suitable catalysts are palladium, nickel, platinum, and alloys thereof, supported on alumina pellets. If the reaction is carried out in the presence of deuterium, reduction of the unsaturated hydrocarbon takes place. In example I, acetylene and D2O are passed over a nicel or alumina catalyst at 180 DEG C.; the product contains C2D2, C2HD, and C2H2. In Example II, acetylene, D2O and D2 are passed over a palladium on alumina catalyst at 140 DEG C. yielding a product composed of ethylene and ethane containing deuterium.
