Abstract

A gasoline containing more than 30 per cent by weight of paraffins and less than 30 per cent by weight of naphthenes is treated to improve its knock stability by a process comprising catalytic treatment of the gasoline with hydrogen in two stages wherein, in the first stage, which is carried out in the presence of a catalyst consisting of platinum supported on an acidic carrier at a temperature between 425 DEG and 525 DEG C. and at a partial pressure of hydrogen of between 25 and 75 atmospheres, the 5-membered ring naphthenes are isomerized to 6-membered ring naphthenes and naphthenes are converted into aromatics, and in the second stage, at least part of the product thus obtained is subjected to dehydrocyclization in the presence of a catalyst consisting of platinum on a silica-gel carrier at a temperature between 480 DEG and 550 DEG C. and at a partial pressure of hydrogen of between 1 and 25 atmospheres. The preferred catalyst for the first step is platinum finely dispersed on alumina activated by treatment with a hydrogen halide, e.g. hydrogen fluoride, or a substance producing a hydrogen halide. An example is given. Specification 719,882 is referred to.
