Abstract

Olefinic gases, cyclic alkanes and acetylene are obtained by passing a gaseous or vaporous hydrocarbon through a zone containing an electrically heated element at 500 DEG -1500 DEG C. in the form of one or more grates arranged so as not to be parallel to the flow of hydrocarbon and cooling within 0.1 second. The individual elements of each grate may be of rod, strip, wire or drop-shaped in cross-section with the wide edge uppermost and are preferably parallel to each other and disposed at any desired angle to the elements of other grates. The walls of the reaction zone may be kept free of carbon by blowing an inert gas on to the wall. The starting material may be propane, heptane or a naphtha and the products contain ethylene, acetylene, propylene, cyclopropane, hydrogen and methane. Specification 792,604 is referred to.
