Abstract
In order to remove oxygen, or hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide, from an oxygen-containing gaseous mixture, the mixture is passed over a platinum or rutherium catalyst together with ethane, propane, ethylene, acetylene or benzene as fuel. To remove oxygen from a mixture of oxygen and nitrogen, the gases, with the stoichiometric amount of ethylene or propane, are passed over a platinum catalyst or, with the corresponding amount of acetylene, over a ruthenium catalyst at a sufficient temperature for combustion to take place. In order to remove hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide from a mixture containing a large amount of oxygen, such as air to be liquefied, the mixture is passed over a platinum catalyst with propane, benzene or ethylene to act as fuel, or over a ruthenium catalyst with propane fuel. In this case the amount of oxygen is seven times the stoichiometric amount for combustion. The metal catalysts are supported on activated alumina pellets.
