Abstract
898,338. Combustion gas. BERKHUIJSEN, E. H., and KEMPEN, H. W. J. Sept. 5, 1958 [Sept. 7, 1957], No. 28656/58. Class 55 (2). Hydrogen and carbon monoxide, or gases containing them are obtained by passing a mixture of a hydrocarbon-containing gas and steam through a zone maintained at not more than 900‹ C., but preferably above 700‹ C., so as to convert ethane and hydrocarbons containing more than 2 carbon atoms to methane, ethylene and compounds of carbon and oxygen, and thereafter heating the mixture to above 1000‹ C. The process, which is particularly applicable to the conversion of refinery gas to a gas of lower calorific value and density, may be carried out (a) cyclically, by passing the mixture successively through the two reactors which have been heated to the required temperatures until the temperatures thereof fall below the necessary levels, whereupon the reactor temperatures are raised once more and the process repeated,- or (b) continuously, in externally heated reactors.
