Hydrocarbons having six and more carbon atoms are heated for a short time, e.g. 1 second at a temperature in the range 400-600‹ C. in the presence of steam but with little or no free oxygen present so as to effect considerable transformation of the hydrocarbons into those having a lower number of carbon atoms per molecule than had the untreated hydrocarbons and subsequently these treated hydrocarbons are passed into a catalyst-containing reaction chamber together with a gas containing free oxygen. Carburetting agents may be introduced into a hot gaseous stream leaving the reaction chamber whereby the colorific value of the final gaseous product in the stream is increased. Thermal cracking of the carburetting agents is thereby achieved which results not in the production of carbon monoxide and hydrogen but in the formation of lower olefines, e.g. ethylene and propylene. Examples are given.
