Abstract

866,161. Combustible gases. POWER-GAS CORPORATION Ltd. Nov. 21, 1957 [Nov. 22, 1956], No. 35684/56. Class 55 (2). Combustible gases are produced by passing a mixture of gaseous or vaporized hydrocarbons and an oxidizing gas through a reaction zone which is maintained at a temperature below 700‹ C. and which contains radioactive material emitting gamma rays or beta particles or both. Hydrocarbon gas or vapour is supplied at 11, and steam, preferably superheated, at 13, so that the mixture passes through connection 7 to a tube 1 which is suspended in a furnace 18. The radioactive material 6 is contained within a metal tube 2 so that gamma rays pass into the reactants in tube 1. The resultant gases are taken off at 17. The temperature in the reactor may be 350‹ C. to 550‹ C. and the pressure between 1 and 30 atmospheres. In a modification carbon dioxide replaces the steam. To reduce the formation of free carbon, air or oxygen may be added to the reactants through line 15. Alternatively, at intervals the reactor may be taken " off stream " and air or oxygen, with or without steam, passed into the reactor to remove the carbon by gasifying it. A number of reactors may be enclosed by the furnace 18, each reactor being taken " off stream " in turn. In a modification the reactor tube 1 is filled with radioactive material which is supported on a grid at the base of the tube 1. The reactants are then subjected to the influence of beta particles as well as gamma radiation and the product combustible gas is scrubbed and/or filtered to remove entrained radioactive particles. When using a hydrocarbon liquid, it may be mixed with superheated steam and the mixture passed through a preheater, which may be heated by the products of combustion of the furnace. Alternatively liquid hydrocarbons may be vaporized before mixing with the steam or carbon dioxide. The radioactive material may be cobalt 60, caesium 134 or 137, europium 154 or 155, nickel 63, technetium 99, promethium 147, thallium 204, ruthenium 106, or strontium 90.
