Abstract

In the thermal dealkylation of aromatic compounds in the presence of a hydrogen-containing dealkylation gas, a gas mixture containing hydrogen and methane is separated from the product, subjected to partial combustion with oxygen and the product used as dealkylation gas. Usually a bleed stream is removed from the gas before the partial combustion, carbon dioxide may be removed by washing and carbon monoxide reacted with steam to give hydrogen and carbon dioxide. In a preferred embodiment the separated product gas after removal of a bleed stream is washed to remove carbon dioxide and separated into two streams. The first is subjected to partial combustion, if desired in two parallel reactors. Part of the hot product if a single reactor is used or the whole product from one of a pair of reactors is mixed with the second stream to heat it and the mixture is mixed with steam and reacted to give hydrogen and carbon dioxide. The resultant mixture is washed to remove steam and carbon dioxide and mixed with the remain partial combustion products to reheat it for use in the dealkylation. The starting material may be a single compound or mixtures such as petroleum hydrocarbons. The hydrogen to hydrocarbon mol ratio may be between 1 and 20 and the reaction is effected at 500-1000 DEG C. and 5-35 atmospheres gauge in an empty space or in the presence of inert particles. The dealkylation may be partial or complete and insufficiently dealkylated product may be recycled. Partial combustion is effected at about the same pressure for convenience and a suitable process is described in Specification 780,120.
