Abstract
Diphenylamine is catalytically cyclodehydrogenated in the vapour state by contacting with a catalyst, consisting of platinum or palladium supported on silica or aluminia or on a mixture of these, in the absence of air or oxygen and at a temperature of not less than 375 DEG C. to give carbazole. The presence of steam and/or hydrogen in the reaction vessel is advantageous and an inert gas such as nitrogen may also be present. If desired, the process may be conducted as a cyclic operation, the unconverted diphenylamine being recycled to the reaction vessel. The weight-hourly-space velocity, i.e. the ratio of the number of parts by weight of diphenylamine per hour introduced into the reaction zone to the number of parts by weight of catalyst preferably does not exceed 0.3.
