Abstract

Catalysts, for the gas phase reaction of organic acids with acetylene to give vinyl esters, are manufactured by causing a solution of Zn or Cd acetate to move through a static mass of active carbon particles at room temperature, the solution having a volume greater than the absorptivity of the mass and containing more acetate than is to be taken up by the mass; the unabsorbed solution and the mass containing absorbed solution are separated when the concentration has reached cx - ba/c - be where a is the desired Zn or Cd content of the catalyst (g./kg.), b is the weight in kg. of the untreated mass, c is the volume of the acetate solution (l.), e is the absorptivity of the active carbon (l./kg.), and x is the initial concentration of Zn or Cd in the solution (g./l.).
