Abstract

Acetylene under pressure is stabilised by mixing with gaseous ammonia in a weight ratio of ammonia to acetylene increasing regularly from 0 at 1 atmosphere to 4 at 50 atmospheres absolute pressure. This is preferably accomplished by dissolving the acetylene in liquid ammonia, compressing and heating to obtain a gaseous acetylene/ammonia mixture which may be stored or transported safely. Before use the acetylene may be freed of ammonia by washing with water. Ammonia vapours leaving the acetylene absorption stage may be recovered by washing the evaporation of ammonia may be used to control the temperature in the absorption tower. The acetylene solution may be heated in a tower containing condensing means in its upper portion to control the ammonia concentration in the mixture.
