Abstract

A normally gaseous saturated hydrocarbon is oxidised with oxygen to give a product comprising formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and unreacted hydrocarbon, the unreacted hydrocarbon is separated from the oxygenated product, preheated to a temperature of 315-425 DEG C. at a pressure of 0-14 kgs/sq. cm. gauge, and mixed with fresh gaseous hydrocarbon and oxygen and the resulting mixture is subjected to oxidation at a temperature of 345-455 DEG C. and a pressure of 0-14 kgs/sq. cm. gauge for 0,1-2 secs. Suitable saturated hydrocarbons for use as starting materials are, for example, methane, ethane, propane, butane or mixtures thereof. Preferably 2-12% by volume of fresh hydrocarbon and 1-6% by volume of fresh oxygen is added to the preheated hydrocarbon. In an example a mixture of methane and ethane is oxidised according to the process.
