Abstract

Paraffins which are gaseous at normal temperatures, especially methane and corresponding unsaturated hydrocarbons are oxidized to yield, e.g. formaldehyde by treatment in a cyclic process in the presence of small quantities of oxides of nitrogen and solid catalysts containing alkali metal borates, at 1-12 atmospheres absolute pressure the volume ratio between O2 and the initial hydrocarbon being below 1.0, preferably 0.5-0.3. An example is provided of the oxidation of methane with air to yield formaldehyde the volume ratio of O2 to CH4 being 0.5 to 1. Specification 686,424 is referred to.
