Abstract

Nitroparaffins are prepared by reacting paraffins with nitrogenperoxide in the gaseous phase in the presence of a catalyst containing lead. Metallic lead, oxides, hydroxides and carbonates of lead and its compounds with organic and inorganic acids may be used as catalysts, but a silicate glass containing lead is particularly advantageous. After removal of the nitroparaffin, the remaining hydrocarbon freed from oxides of nitrogen, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide may be returned to the process. In examples, in which ethane, propane and butane are nitrated, lead peroxide and lead nitrate supported on glass are used as catalysts and also pieces of lead glass obtained from the following mixtures: (a) leadmonoxide, silicon dioxide, potassium oxide, arsenic trioxide, potassium nitrate and manganesedioxide and (b) lead monoxide, silicon dioxide, potassium oxide, sodium oxide, borontrioxide, antimonytrioxide, aluminiumtrioxide and arsenictrioxide.
