Abstract

Formic acid in a mixture containing one or more C2-8 aliphatic carboxylic acids is selectively decomposed by contacting the mixture, at 80 DEG -220 DEG C. in the vapour phase and in the presence of molecular oxygen, with a catalyst containing 0.05 to 5% by weight (based on the carrier) of platinum on an alumina carrier, the carrier having a non-acidic or scarcely acidic surface and a specific surface area of 20 to 400 sq.m./g.
