Abstract

Formaldehyde is recovered in the form of an aqueous solution from the mixture obtained by the catalytic conversion of methanol using a dehydrogenation catalyst and a feed consisting of methanol, water vapour and air, by fractionating in a column of the bubbling plate type, comprising utilising the heat in the product at least to aid the fractionation causing the liquid descending the fractionating column to the point of introduction of the mixture to take over one minute to pass over a plate, and maintaining a methanol concentration on the topmost plate of the column above 20% by weight. If desired, some of the heat in the mixture derived from the reactor may be taken off by means of a heat exchanger before the mixture is passed to the fractionating column. The aqueous formaldehyde solution containing only small amounts of methanol is removed from the bottom of the column. Preferably, after the fractionation, sufficient water is added to dissolve the methanol and the resulting mixture is used for the production of more formaldehyde. The Specification contains description and drawings of suitable apparatus for carrying out the process.
