1,268,842. Purification of alkyl mercaptan reaction product. DEUTSCHE GOLDUND SILBER-SCHEIDEANSTALT. 4 July, 1969 [4 July, 1968], No. 33739/69. Heading C2C. A process for working up C 1-4 alkyl mercaptans, obtained by the interaction of the corresponding primary alkyl alcohol and hydrogen sulphide under pressure in the presence of a catalyst, comprises separating in a packed or plate column the gas mixture accumulating after reaction (i.e. hydrogen sulphide, unreacted alcohol, alkyl mercaptan, dialkyl sulphide, water, dialkyl ether and inert gases) into volatile and non-volatile fractions under at most 10 atmospheres and at 10 to 140‹ C., and washing out entrained non-volatiles (primarily alkyl mercaptan and dialkyl sulphide) from the volatile fraction using a washing agent, e.g. methanol, flowing in counter current to volatile fraction in the upper part of the separation column or in a separate washing column; the entrained non-volatiles together with washing agent are returned to the separation column and, following removal of hydrogen sulphide and the ether are worked up together with the initial non-volatile fraction in further columns. Mercaptan containing less than 0.02% of hydrogen sulphide is obtained.
