Abstract
Monocarboxylic acids prepared by the reaction of formic acid, or of carbon monoxide and water, either with alkanes in the presence of hydrogen acceptors or with alkenes, are purified by treating with a porous material containing at least 50% of silicon dioxide, e.g. active clays, diatomaceous earth, silica gel, and silica-alumina. The treatment may be at between 50 DEG and 150 DEG C. with the porous material in an amount between 0.1 and 10% by weight of the acid. A boron trifluoride or phosphoric acid catalyst may be used in the preparation of the acid which may also be treated with a complex-former for any metal compounds present and/or with an alkaline aqueous solution with pH not above 8.5.
