Abstract

White fumaric acid is prepared by oxidizing benzene with oxygen in the presence of a catalyst and with a conversion of at least 95% per pass to maleic anhydride, which is absorbed in water to form aqueous maleic acid solution, contacting with a solid adsorbent to obtain a product with a colour not above 7 Gardner, and isomerizing to fumaric acid which is separated as a white solid. Active carbon, an acid cation exchange resin, silica gel, alumina, and diatomaceous earth are examples of adsorbent used and a series of zones active carbon, cation exchange resin and active carbon is also described. Isomerization to fumaric acid may be at between 40 DEG C. and 130 DEG C. in the presence of a ammonium bromide-ammonium persulphate or a thiourea catalyst.
