Abstract

Acid mixtures comprising one or more aliphatic carboxylic acids having 2-8 carbon atoms and formic acid are purified by selectively decomposing the formic acid by contacting the mixture at 80-220 DEG C. with a catalyst comprising one or more of the metals Pt, Os, Ir, Ru, Pd and Rh on an active carbon carrier. The process may be effected in the liquid or vapour phase, if desired under elevated pressure, and molecular oxygen (e.g. air) may be present.
