Abstract
Olefins are hydroformlated by contacting an a -olefine containing at least 3 carbon atoms, carbon monoxide and hydrogen with a hydroformylation catalyst comprising a metal of Group 8 of the Periodic Table, in a reaction zone maintained at elevated pressure and a temperature in the range of 110-130 DEG C., the catalyst being introduced into the reaction zone in an organic solvent, the ratio of olefine to solvent being within the ratio 1:1 to 5:1 by liquid volume and the catalyst solution containing the equivalent of 0.2 to 0.8 gms Group 8 metal per 100 ml. of solvent. Suitable pressures for carrying out the process are within the range 100-500 atmospheres. Suitable solvents are, for example, saturated hydrocarbons or the high-boiling residues obtained by hydrogenating the hydroformylation product and distilling off the lower-boiling alcohols so produced.
