Abstract

516,160. Regenerating catalysts. JOHNSON, G. W. (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). July 23, 1938, No. 21885. [Class 1 (i)] [Also in Group IV] In the synthesis of hydrocarbons from carbon monoxide and hydrogen, the catalyst is regenerated at intervals by passing in the vapour of a liquid which is a solvent for the high molecular weight products such as paraffin wax. under conditions such that at least a partial condensation of the vapour occurs. Suitable liquids are a fraction of the synthesized product, benzine, benzene alcohols, saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons, tetrahydronaphthalene, or nitrogen-containing compounds such as aliphatic and aromatic amines ; gaseous hydrocarbons such as butane and propane may also be used, and more than one substance may be used, for instance, the treatment may be first with benzine and then with toluene, xylene or a nitrogen compound. The vapour of the liquid may be added to the reactant mixture. The reaction may be effected at reduced, atmospheric, or increased pressures, for instance, up to 50 atmospheres or more. In an example for the production of benzine at 180‹C. and atmospheric pressure the vapour of a fraction of the product of boiling-point 180‹C. is used to regenerate the catalyst; the condensed benzine flowing from the catalyst is rich in paraffin wax.
