Abstract

[Also in Division F4] In the point separation of acetylene and ethylene together with some methane and ethane from cracked gas obtained by a flame burning beneath the surface of petroleum and containing carbon monoxide, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, C 3 to C 5 hydrocarbons together with carbon oxysulphide and carbon disulphide as claimed in parent Specification and effected by drying and compressing the feed, condensing part of the methane and the whole of the remaining hydrocarbons, CS 2 and COS in a heat exchanger 5 separating them at 6, vaporizing the separated condensate in said exchanger 5, compressing said vapour at 21 and thereafter passing said separated fraction under pressure into a distillation column (not shown) to yield a liquid fraction containing the whole of the C 3 to C 5 hydrocarbons and CS 2 and COS and to yield a product gaseous fraction containing ethylene, acetylene methane and ethane, the temperature of the heat exchanger 5 is maintained above the solidification temperature of acetylene in admixture with the other condensible constituents and uncondensed constituents withdrawn at 7 from separator 6 are freed of acetylene by washing with liquid ethylene and/or ethane in a scrubber 8. The acetylene-free gaseous effluent of column 8 is cooled in a heat exchanger 10, freed of liquid C 2 hydrocarbons at 11, warmed in exchanger 10 and turbine-expanded at 13 to produce cold for the process. Washing liquid for column 8 is provided from an external source 17 and by the separator 11 and acetylene containing liquid withdrawn from column 8 is added to condensate withdrawn from separator 6 prior to vaporization in exchanger 5.
