Abstract

Propionaldehyde is prepared by continuously guiding a solution of a cobalt carbonyl catalyst in an inert, non-polar organic solvent in the form of a thin, film-like layer along a heat-transfer surface in the presence of a gaseous mixture of ethylene, carbon monoxide and hydrogen at a temperature from 120 DEG to 200 DEG C. and a pressure from 20 to 600 atm., continuously removing the resulting solution of propionaldehyde and catalyst from the reaction zone and separating the propionaldehyde from the catalyst solution, e.g. by fractional distillation. The solvent is preferably a hydrocarbon boiling at a higher temperature than propionaldehyde.
