Abstract

An olefin oxide is obtained by introducing a mono-olefin, containing at least 3 carbon atoms, into a water-immiscible liquid hydrocarbon solvent which is inert to oxygen and to olefin oxides and passing an oxygen-containing gas into the solvent while it is held under pressure and at a temperature of 130 DEG C. or above, the solvent being vigorously agitated and the volatilized products being continuously removed from the reactor. The preferred solvents are benzene and tertiary butyl benzene. The preferred pressure is above 300 lbs./sq. inch. Examples are given of the conversion of propylene to propylene oxide. Some propylene glycol and propylene glycol esters are also obtained.
