Abstract

Acrylic acid is separated from a mixture with acetic acid by contacting with water and an organic extractant composed of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, which is immiscible with water but miscible with acrylic acid, and has a boiling point different from acrylic acid and may be distilled and separated therefrom. Extractants specified are ethers, alcohols, ketones and esters and the process may be continuous or batchwise. Examples describe the use of diisopropyl ether and isopropyl acetate extractants and polymerization inhibitors may be present during the extraction.
