Abstract

In a process for the manufacture of adipic acid by oxidizing cyclohexane under pressure and in the liquid phase at elevated temperature with an oxygen-containing gas and then oxidizing the product with nitric acid after stripping out cyclohexane, the product of the first oxidation is introduced without preliminary injection of water into the cyclohexane stripper by means of a let-down valve at 140 DEG C. or more, preferably 145 DEG to 155 DEG C., and at a pressure greater than that in the stripper. The pressure in the stripper may be atmospheric or lower. The temperature and quantity of steam introduced in the stripper may be adjusted to obtain a stripped residue having a water content of 8 to 15% by weight. The stripped residue may be steam distilled and the steam volatile fraction oxidized to adipic acid with nitric acid, or the steam volatile fraction may be washed with aqueous alkali and water before nitric acid oxidation. Examples are given. Specification 633,354 is referred to.
