Abstract
An aliphatic peracid, for example peracetic acid, is prepared by reacting the corresponding aldehyde with oxygen in a process wherein fresh aldehyde and oxygen are fed into a reactor by means of an injector arranged to aspirate reaction gases from its neighbourhood in the reactor and mix these with the incoming reactants, and cooling means are provided in the reactor. The feed may contain at least 5 mole per cent oxygen in pure or diluted form and the conversion of oxygen in the reaction is at least 98 mole per cent but less than 100%. The reaction may be carried out at 80 DEG to 200 DEG C., 0 to 40 p.s.i.g. The product gas stream may be fed to the intermediate portion of a distillation column to the top of which is fed an inert solvent. A liquid solution of the acid in the solvent is taken off from the bottom of the column. Unreacted aldehyde leaving the top of the column may be recycled to the reactor.
