Abstract

1,2 - Diaminomethylcyclobutane is prepared by the catalytic hydrogenation of 1,2-dicyanocyclobutane in a solvent comprising an ether, an ester or an alcohol having not less than 3 carbon atoms. The cis- or transform or a mixture of these may be obtained depending on the isomer used as starting material. Preferably ammonia is also present in the reaction mixture. Suitable solvents are, for example, ethyl ether, tetrahydrofuran, dioxan, anisole, methyl acetate, ethyl acetate, n-propanol, isopropyl alcohol, n-butanol, 2-butanol, tert.-butanol and cyclohexanol. Suitable catalysts are, for example, those containing cobalt, nickel, platinum or palladium and the process is preferably carried out at 70-180 DEG C.
