Abstract
a ,b -Olefinically unsaturated organic nitriles are obtained by oxidizing the corresponding a ,b -olefinically unsaturated aldehyde in the liquid phase in the presence of ammonia and a catalyst containing a metal of group VIII of the Periodic System (i.e. Fe, Co, Ni, Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir, Pt). The catalyst is suitably employed in an amount of 0.0001 to 0.1% by wt. of the aldehyde, a specified catalyst being tetracarbonyl-m -rhodium dichloride. The oxidation is preferably effected at 0-100 DEG C. in the presence of oxygen or gas mixtures containing oxygen and a solvent, suitably a water-miscible solvent, e.g. methanol, dioxan, may be present. In an example crotononitrile is prepared from crotonaldehyde; acrylonitrile may also be obtained from acrolein.
