Abstract

1,209,125. Vinyl acetate. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G., and FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 12 March, 1969 [15 March, 1968], No. 12976/69. Heading C2C. Vinyl acetate is prepared by reacting ethylene, acetic acid and molecular oxygen or air in the gas phase at elevated temperature in contact with a catalyst comprising metallic ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium or platinum supported on a carrier and further comprising one or more alkali metal or alkaline earth metal acetates, or alkali metal or alkaline earth metal compounds capable of forming acetates and in which the acetic acid contains up to 20% of formic acid. The formic acid may be present in the acetic acid obtained as a primary product in hydrocarbon oxidation processes or as a byproduct in epoxidation processes using peracetic acid. Additional activating metals such as copper, silver, gold, zinc, cadmium, tin, lead, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, manganese, iron, cobalt, or nickel may be present.
