Abstract
A process for producing carbonyl compounds comprises oxidizing an olefinic material with 2-20 C atoms, and at least one H atom attached to an unsaturated C atom, with an organic hydroperoxide, in the presence of a platinum group (i.e. Pd, Pt, Ru, Rh, Os or Ir) catalyst. The olefinic material may be straight chained or cyclic or aromatic, and may contain more than one double bond. It may also bear additional substituents, e.g. Cl. The products are generally ketones, exceptions being CH3CHO from CH2 = CH2, and aldehydes in general from dienes, e.g. butadiene yields crotonaldehyde. As organic hydroperoxides there may be used cumene hydroperoxide, t-butyl hydroperoxide, cyclohexyl hydroperoxide or a -phenethyl hydroperoxide. Preferred types are derived from an aralkyl hydrocarbon having at least one H atom on the C atom adjacent to the ring, e.g. cumene and ethylbenzene. Ketone and hydroxy hydroperoxides may also be used. The catalyst is preferably derived from Pd, and is most suitably a soluble salt thereof, e.g. chloride, nitrate or sulphate, used in an amount between 10-4-10-1 parts by weight per part of hydroperoxide. Reaction temperature is usually - 20 DEG - + 200 DEG C. at atmospheric pressure, but pressures up to 50 At. may be used. The reaction is preferably conducted in an acidic aqueous solution, but non-aqueous solvents may be present.
