Abstract

Keto compounds are prepared by reacting an organic compound, in which a hydrogen atom attached to carbon is rendered labile by a single adjacent activating group, in the liquid phase with an alpha-unsaturated aliphatic ketone in presence of a basic catalyst. Examples describe the reaction of methyl vinyl ketone with (1) acetone in presence of alcoholic potash and butanol to give a substance in which nine acetoethyl groups have entered the acetone molecule; (2) 2-nitropropane in presence of trimethyl-benzyl ammonium hydroxide and dioxane to give 2-nitro-2-acetoethyl-propane. Other unsaturated ketones specified are ethyl vinyl ketone, mesityl oxide, and isopropenyl methyl and ethyl ketones. Other catalysts specified are sodium hydroxide and sodium methylate.
