Abstract
Acetonitrile is recovered from a crude mixture of acetonitrile and acrylonitrile by reacting the acrylonitrile content thereof with an inorganic or organic compound containing active hydrogen in the presence of 0.001-0.1% by weight (based on crude mixture) of sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, ammonium hydroxide or ammonia, as an alkaline catalyst, neutralizing the reaction mixture and separating acetonitrile by distillation. The "active hydrogen compounds" are defined as HX, where H is a reactive hydrogen atom and X an inorganic or organic radical which will react with the C-C double bond of acrylonitrile to effect addition of HX across the bond; suitable compounds are water, which may already be present in the crude mixture, ammonia, which also acts as the catalyst, and mono- and poly-hydric alcohols which may also be present in the crude mixture, e.g. methanol, ethanol propanol or allyl alcohol. Examples are provided.
