Abstract
Methyl methacrylate is prepared by reacting a mixture of methacrylamide sulphate and sulphonic acid with methanol at 105 DEG to 130 DEG C. and at above atmospheric pressure, the mixture if desired containing up to 0.2 mol. of water per mol. of methacrylamide sulphate. Crude methyl methacrylate is recovered by dilution with water, at least 2 mols of water per mol of methacrylamide sulphate, followed by a phase separation, and purification by distillation. The methacrylamide sulphate can be prepared either by mixing methacrylamide and sulphuric acid, by the reaction of acetone cyanhydrin with sulphuric acid, or by the reaction of methacrylonitrile, water and sulphuric acid, and examples are described.
