Abstract

A method for the preparation of alcoholic sulfate, which comprises feeding a recycled alcoholic sulfate, an alcoholic sulfuric acid, a base and water to a reaction mixture containing a major proportion of the alcoholic sulfate, a minor proportion of the alcoholic acid -sulfuric and at least a sufficient proportion of the base to neutralize the alcohol-sulfuric acid, keeping the concentration of the alcohol-sulfate above 50% by weight of the mixture and this concentration being sufficient to keep the mixture in a concentrated liquid state, and maintain the mixture at a temperature between the ambient temperature and the decomposition temperature of the alcohol-sulfate, whereby the base and the alcohol-sulfuric acid are reacted to form alcohol-sulfate, recovering a secondary proportion of the product consisting of alcohol sulfate in the form of a concentrated liquid state solution, and recycle a major proportion of the alcohol sulfate.
