Abstract

A process for the production of 4,4-dichlorodiphenyl sulphone is characterized in that chlorobenzene is reacted with a solution of sulphur trioxide in methyl pyrosulphate and the resulting sulphone is isolated. The solution of sulphur trioxide in methyl pyrosulphate may be obtained by reacting sulphur trioxide with dimethyl sulphate or by reacting dimethyl ether with stabilized sulphur trioxide trimer or the sulphur trioxide may be dissolved in methyl pyrosulphate. Alternatively the methyl pyrosulphate and chlorobenzene may be mixed and sulphur trioxide dissolved in the mixture. The desired product may be precipitated with water from the reacted mixture. An example is furnished. The conversion of the product to 4,41-diaminodipheny sulphone is mentioned.
