Abstract

1351453 4,4<SP>1</SP>-Dichlorodiphenyl sulphone IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 5 May 1971 [6 Feb 1970 15 Jan 1971] 5793/70 and 2112/71 Heading C2C 4,4<SP>1</SP>-Dichlorodiphenyl sulphone is obtained from 4-chlorobenzene sulphonio acid, itself obtained by the reaction of chlorobenzene with SO 3 or H 2 SO 4 , by adding further quantities of chlorobenzene to the reaction mixture at such a rate as to maintain the refluxing reactant mixture at 190 to 265‹ C. and at a superatmospheric pressure of 30 to 700 kN/m<SP>2</SP>(5-100 p.s.i.) whilst the water formed during the reaction is removed from the reaction mixture. Examples are given for the production of both required product and 4-chlorobenzene sulphonic acid.
