Abstract

1469896 Preparation of hydroxytetramethylbutylbenzene CIBA GEIGY AG 26 Sept 1975 [9 Oct 1974] 39559/75 Heading C2C The invention comprises a process for the manufacture of a hydroxy-(1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl)-benzene by reacting the corresponding hydroxybenzene with 2,4,4-trimethylpentene in the presence of a hydroxyalkyl compound and using highly concentrated sulphuric acid (as hereinafter defined) as the catalyst, characterized in that the reaction is carried out in the presence of ethylene glycol. By highly concentrated sulphuric acid is meant a sulphuric acid which contains 90 to 98% by weight of H 2 SO 4 , the remainder consisting essentially of water. It is possible to use as the 2,4,4-trimethylpentene either of the two isomers, that is to say α-diisobutylene of the formula or #-diisobutylene of the formula or, usually particularly advantageously, a mixture of the two. The ratio of ethylene glycol to sulphuric acid, in parts by volume, which is used for the reaction is advantageously 1 : 2 to 2 : 1.
