Abstract

Pseudocumene-5-carboxylic acid or a salt thereof, is prepared by condensing pseudocumene with chloroacetyl chloride according to the Friedel-Crafts reaction, reacting the resulting 5-chloroacetyl pseudocumene with a hypochlorite and if desired, converting a pseudocumene-5-carboxylic acid salt so obtained to the free acid, or, if desired, converting a pseudocumene-5-carboxylic acid so obtained into a salt. In the example pseudocumene and chloroacetyl chloride are reacted in carbon disulphide in the presence of aluminium chloride and the resulting chloroacetyl compound oxidized with sodium hypochlorite in alcohol.
